Marriage at the govtAPI level is simply filing a marriage license so
that when the govt does a getSpouse() call there will be a value
returned. A divorce is simply filing a rollback.
In order for various alternative forms of marriage to be "recognized" by
the govt, you'd basically be filling out the equivalent form. What's
the diff? The form itself doesn't use anybody's rhetoric, it's just
names and addresses of participants and witnesses.
If we ever get to a society where you can connect to a secure server and
change your spouse of record with a mouse-click, there will still be
folks who say "well, we don't have to be clicked, that's just a bunch of
govt hooey, we love each other and that stuff doesn't matter".
