Reston predates the City of Irvine -- Irvine was incorporated
in 1972, and actually got going conceptually only a few years
earlier -- around 1964. However, Irvine outdoes them all on
scale. When done it will be the largest planned community in
the United States, with around 420,000 population. Also, it
is planned to a finer granularity than many places because
it is one of the very few communities of large size where all
the land is owned by a single landowner (The Irvine Company).
