A lot of the 3d game makers just license the Quake engine anyways, so ID
still makes money. Unreal has its own engine.

Windows, Mac and Linux at the same time. This is great since most of the
multi-player servers are run on linux, at least the stable ones anyways
:-). It should also give a boost to both the mac and linux platforms in
the eyes of other game companies.
