Metcalfe: HTTP/1.1 improves Net performance

I mentioned W3C's work on HTTP performance modeling at the IETF to Bob
Metcalfe a few weeks ago, and it ended up in his weekly InfoWorld column, From
the Ether:

"One item of good news is that the Web's HTTP may soon be improved. See
ftp://ds.internic.net/rfc/rfc2068.txt for the January 1997 specifications.

With its persistent connections, HTTP 1.1 will reduce the sending of packets
that open and close Internet connections for each of the many items found on
Web pages. One estimate sent to me had this improvement alone, when widely
implemented, more than doubling Web performance. Hurray!"
