Agreed. I didn't see the study myself, just read the authors'
conclusions in The Medical Post. Also note that this magazine
can sometimes be a bit sensational in its reporting.
The questions you ask are good ones. I believe this was more
of an incidental finding and that the original objectives were
to study the effect of maternal nutrition/vegetarianism on fetal
health. So it's an association, not cause/effect, and there
could well have been other factors involved.
I also wonder why this unusual male/female gender ratio hasn't
been noted in countries like India (or has it?), where much of
the population is vegetarian.
