Sounds like your complaint lies with Dell, not with Microsoft. The
half-assed install that was done on your system probably has something
to do with why it runs like shit.
I guess the good news is that I don't work for Honda and thus don't have
to listen to every bad car repair story where the mechanic blamed Honda
for his own incompetence or laziness.
BTW, you bitch about the "Wintel cartel" and yet you let your father buy
a Pentium. Meanwhile I'm writing this on a Cyrix 6x86-200. Hmm.
And speaking of market alternatives that you haven't taken advantage of,
why don't you download Caldera OpenDOS (http://www.caldera.com/dos) for
*free*? It claims to have a "comprehensive DOS utility set" so it must
include defrag (like MS-DOS 6.0 does).
