Rumor: Cracked Cube Owners Forced to Sign NDAs Before Receiving
Replacements?
By Nick dePlume
Earlier this month, Think Secret broke the story that open cracks were
forming along mold lines on Power Macintosh G4 Cube plastics, and c|net
followed up today with their report. While the crack/mold line issue can
be subject to some debate, one rumor is circulating that provides
additional insight into Apple's strategy in keeping the incident under
wraps.
An interesting tidbit was recently shared with Think Secret by sources:
Customers with "cracked" Cubes were forced by Apple to sign nondisclosure
agreements before receiving replacement units. These confidentiality
documents, in very specific terms, stated that the customer could not
discuss the issue with others or report it to any news source.
Sources likened this to the incident of replacing defective PowerBook
5300s, when Apple was able to slow news of the component problem by
requiring NDA signings of 5300 owners. Other resellers weren't surprised
by Apple's recent action with Cube replacements
