Laptop programs give
students an edge

IRVINE, Calif. -- It's sleek, packed with a billion
bytes of power, a ticket to a world of information. And
it cost the parents of Ky Fell, a freshman at Irvine
High, more than $2,500.
``It's just mine,'' said Fell, 15, cradling his Toshiba
laptop computer. ``No one else can mess with it.''
Fell is one of 42 ninth-grade pioneers in Irvine High's
high-tech -- and high-cost -- program, launched
this fall for owners of laptop computers.
