Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Inc. moved to expand the scope of its
budding media empire Wednesday with the purchase of United Artists
Theatre Group in a deal it valued at $850 million. The Dallas
investment firm, which has been quickly snapping up radio and
television properties in the wake of the deregulation of the
broadcasting business, said it will acquire Oscar I Corp., parent of
the United Artists Theatre Group, which it will use as a platform to
become "a significant investor in the industry." Hicks Muse said
United Artists is currently the second-largest theatrical exhibitor
of motion pictures in the U.S. with 2,174 screens at 340 theater
locations in 26 states. (WSJ)
