In fairness to the police, this isn't true. Some of the nonviolent
tactics which the protesters were planning to use included forming
human chains blockading some of the WTO meeting sites. This is
illegal activity, peaceful or not, and they were expecting to be
arrested for it (in fact, they'd trained for it) --- but not gassed.
