[Trash talk and bombast aren't his style, but the low-key founder of
Commerce One won't shy away from a good dustup. Some observers say
Hoffman, a fellow West Point graduate and former triathlete who turns 53
in December, will still be standing when the smoke clears. "He's a
fighter, not a quitter," says Kenneth Goldman, senior vice president and
CFO of Excite@Home. Goldman also served in that capacity under CEO
Hoffman from 1992 to 1996 at Sybase. "He's not the keynote-speaker type,
but he can be obstinate and, ultimately, very determined," Goldman says
