Indian scholars are most unhappy with her use of Sanskrit on her latest
album, Ray of Light. Scholars in the Hindu town of Benaras tell the United
News of India that Madonna's song "Shanti/Ashtangi" contains an obvious
mispronunciation. On the track, the newly mystical Madonna invokes a prayer
chanted at the start of ashtanga yoga exercise: "Vunde gurunam caranavinde/
Sandarsita svatma sukhavadohe," which translated means, "I worship the
gurus' lotus feet/ Awakening the happiness of the self revealed." She later
sings repeatedly, "Om Shanti, Om Shanti/ Shanti shanti/ Shantay Om." The
prayer is supposed to bring peace, but Sanskrit professor B.N. Chaturvedi
wonders whether it's working for Mama Madonna. "How can it bring peace to
Madonna and her audiences when she pronounces 'Shanti, Shanti,' as
'Shant-ee Shant-ee?'" he asks. According to scholars, the word should be
pronounced with a clipped E sound and not a long E sound. "It is one thing
to make a mistake in ordinary conversation but another to chant it
incorrectly," says Chaturvedi.
