This is a small conference put on by UCI and USC every year which has a
focus on Software Engineering. It is a good forum for publishing
preliminary papers on a subject, is cheap to attend for the many SoCal
FoRK'ers, and has a solid program committee.

> CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
>
> California Software Symposium `97
>
> THEME: Bringing the Internet to Practical Use
>
>
>University of California November 7, 1997
>Irvine, California UCI Student Center
>
>
>The California Software Symposium (CSS `97) is the seventh in a series of
>annual meetings on software engineering co-sponsored by the UCI's Irvine
>Research Unit in Software (IRUS) and USC's Center for Software Engineering
>(CSE). The purpose of these symposia is to bring together researchers and
>practitioners to share ideas on the state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice
>in software engineering through presentations and panel discussions.
>
>CSS `97 will focus in part on practical use of the internet. We encourage
>submissions on this topic. Other topics of interest include, but are not
>limited to:
>
> Software engineering environments
> Software system architectures
> Reuse and reverse engineering
> Testing, verification, and validation
> Computer-supported cooperative work
> Metrics, measurement, and evaluation
> Human-computer interaction
> Requirements and design
> Formal methods
> Software process
> Product and process management
>
>Papers, presentations, and panels are invited on new approaches and
>experiences. Emphasis will be on early dissemination of new ideas and on
>experience with software techniques on actual projects. Experience reports
>should report lessons that have general applicability.
>
>New to CSS this year are boasters - quick presentations that enable others
>to learn about the Boaster's work, an idea or a problem of interest.
>Discussion and networking occur at the break immediately following.
>
>Paper submissions should be no longer than 6000 words. Submissions
>significantly longer will not be reviewed. Paper submissions must include
>references, which do not count towards the word count. Accepted papers must
>be camera ready according to symposium guidelines that will be provided and
>will appear in the proceedings.
>
>Presentation submissions should be a 1000-2000 word abstract accompanied by an
>outline which must present enough information to evaluate the contribution of
>the presentation. Presentation abstracts and overhead copies will be made
>available to symposium attendees.
>
>Panel submissions should include a topic, title, description, and suggested
>panelists.
>
>Boaster submissions should be a 100 word description of a two-four minute
>presentation.
>
>Submissions are due by July 31, 1997. The program committee will review all
>papers, abstracts and panel proposals for quality and relevance. All boasters
>(unless deemed inappropriate) will be allowed to boast.
