The reason I expected to see Noam Chomsky is more to do with his
contribution to the study of language than his political views, although I
guess it is an open question whether he'll be remembered for his linguistics
or his politcs.

Either way, Chomsky is the seventh most cited writer in the humanities and
the only living person in the top ten. He is beaten only by Marx, Lenin,
Shakespeare, the Bible, Aristotle, Plato and Freud.

Seems strange to me that he didn't make the Time top 100.

PS And, of course, the New York Times described him as "the most important
intellectual alive" :-)
