Whaddya wanna know? :-)
Once you have "enough" money, they don't bind so tight, especially when the
option is joining a promising startup. I actually was very seriously
considering moving to ms2, but the fit wasn't that great -- in particular,
they needed C++ wizards, and although I have a lot of strengths, I would
never call myself a C++ wizard. (Especially at the time I interviewed there.
But that's a whole 'nother story.)
Of course, I don't even remember how many MSFT points that was ago... so in
retrospect I'm probably really happy that I stayed at Microsoft. (Not even
to mention that this is a very cushy job that I'd be insane to give up...
plus I'm really excited about the COM+/clustering research I'm doing...)
