...and the latency involved in following a hyperlink from a "footnote"
or "bibliography" often dwarfed today's lag from GEO.

Obviously, some form of shared caching was required, especially after
"books" left the domain of the Natural Scientist and World Traveller
and catered more to the popular tastes of schoolboys, ploughboys,
and even 'servant women of the better sort':
