Speaking of Bach's Goldberg Variations, don't waste your time with Trevor
Pinnock's version (IMHO). I have an older piano version on LP (DG label) by
Wilhelm Kempff that's excellent. Some years ago now I picked up Pinnock's
harpsichord version on CD, but have been very disappointed with it. Pinnock
plays the opening like another variation, instead of clearly establishing the
theme to be varied. I don't understand a class that inherits only itself.
