I'm sure Norinco (Chinese People's Army weapons exporting company),
Makarov (Czech), IZHMASH (Russian), IAI (Israeli) and the IRA gun
factories will all cooperate just as Smith and Wesson has, right? 8^)
Those first three (and Bulgaria, Hungary, etc.) make most of the weapons
(esp. the AK-47 and derivatives) we see being used in places like
Africa. Why, I think the US current administration is working a deal to
let Norinco use part of one of our old west coast navy facilities (San
Diego?) as a distribution center, as part of Chinese engagement. Oh, and
we busted some 2,000 Norinco weapons being smuggled into the US a few
years back to be distributed to west coast street gangs.
Bans cannot work until *all* the armies and weapons producers stop
making and using firearms, and 50-100 years elapse since the last
cartridge was loaded. World monitoring would be needed to insure that no
one reloads cartridges in their basement, or machines any parts sets in
their small shops. Safety uber alles, right? 8^) Ask LAUSD spokesman Jim
Gamboa, who says that "when it comes to safety, it's hard to overreact."
He was referring to a child nearly suspended from LA public schools for
having photos of himself and his brother at the shooting range (under
supervision of their aunt, a police weapons instructor).

BTW, a federal court judge threw out the Philadelphia et al. firearms
lawsuit the other day (at least Philly's participation, since Ed Rendell
wants to be governor here, God help us):
while we're reporting a 7.5% crime drop in the Philly suburbs:

the day after reporting the fact that these stats are woefully
incomplete (reporting of stats by police departments is voluntary; 10%
don't report at all, and 25% provide incomplete data):

Oh, and you can find the Aussie crime statistics here:
