The indirect energy savings of email can be enormous, but they are
sociological and open to disagreement.

On the other hand, there seem to be some pretty hard-core electrical
engineering reasons for assuming that a desktop computer that's on all day
uses the same amount of electricity whether it's sending email fifty times
a day or five times a day.

Perhaps they thought that lower usage could mean some load-balanced
servers could be taken offline, or... hey wait, why am I trying to
rationalize this ridiculous edict? :-)
