I guess IBM can denounce me as being guilty of ordering a bare-naked
(OS-wise) xSeries 220. By the way I bought my first Linux CD the
other day (Red Hat Linux 7.0). Ad did my umpteenth install. Then
promptly wiped it with 7.1 off the ftp site. I nearly had a heart
attack when it displayed a hex error dump... before realizing it was
some guy's idea of a joke in the screensaver. :)

The Ultra 160 SCSI is nice, especially block I/O. The bytewise I/O is
limited by CPU due to crappiness of glibc. According to Bonnie:

              -------Sequential Output-------- ---Sequential Input-- --Random--
-Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks---
Machine MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU /sec %CPU
         1000 14092 98.7 28675 12.5 8736 5.7 12003 89.0 24332 7.4 196.9 1.5

CPU ain't a match for a nice Alpha, but at half the price I'm not
complaining. Now if I can just figure out this
ADSL-ethernet-USB-firewall-etc business, I'll be set.
