I've often been able to bypass the "Boot-test" (which is a worthless
test of "does this computer contain a bomb or a gun or some other
hidden evil") by simply putting my laptop through the X-Ray. I've done
it dozens of times with several varieties of laptop and never lost
data. I wouldn't do it in a place like Sheremetovo (Moscow) Where the
X-Ray machines have handlettered signs that say "film-safe," but
that's another matter entirely.
