Well, as you can see, I ended up at UC Irvine. I'm very happy to have found a
group focused on sw engg of Web protocols, and it's a direct result of my
years at W3C at the intersection of research, standardization, and industry.
I was bitterly disappointed not oto go directly to grad school, but as it
turned out, work was the best outcome of all -- I learned a lot more about my
field, about reputations, and developed far, far better focus on what I want
to do. [it's embarassing to look over my original statements of purpose!]
A running start means better funding, more ideas on what to write, for whom,
and makes the whole process more pleasant than watching other confused first
years figure out how grad school works... though some would say I'm one of
them :-)
