Developers: Make Mac code public
By Wendy J. Mattson (wendy_mattson@macweek.com)
and John Batteiger (john_batteiger@macweek.com)
A group of developers has pitched a radical proposal to Apple: make
portions of the
source code for the upcoming Mac OS X freely available.
The principal author of the proposal, developer Don Yacktman, said Apple could
reduce its engineering costs and keep developers from leaving the Mac
platform for
the free Linux OS by giving developers ready access to the source code of
both the
PowerPC and Intel versions of the Mach kernel and Driver Kit portions of
Mac OS
X -- some of the core ingredients of Apple's next-generation operating
system.

I know that, you know that, it's Apple that doesn't know that.
