I would say this applies to all fields, not just just religeous ones.
Many people do, an insignificant percentage understand.
Technology has only made this worse. Doing has become a matter of
following what the computer tells you, and high wages drain away the
people that can teach understanding. Even the religeous guru's are in
decline. Soon noone will be left to understand.
Good thing there will be more microprocessors shipped this year then
there are humans on Earth, someone has to tell people what to do.
