Thurs. 29 April Online Reporter:
OR 145-06 Former W3C-er Forms Zot Inc
A new strategic web consultancy has joined the fray. This one's
headed by Sally Khudairi, former head of communications at the World
Wide Web Consortium. Khudairi left W3C in September for a position
at Cambridge Technology Partners and shortly thereafter, due to a
reorg, the group she joined was dissolved. After leaving Cambridge
Technology Partners in March, she decided to try working for herself
and started Zot Inc and its consulting arm, Zot Group. Khudairi's
not ready to say how many other arms Zot will have, just that one
will be a new interactive marketing channel that she plans to unveil
this fall.
Khudairi was a consultant for several years before joining W3C in
1996 and seems to be enjoying rediscovering her roots. The Zot Group
focuses on three consulting areas - standards strategy,
collaborative partnerships/networking and marketing strategy and
tactics. Khudairi and the Zot Group's other consultants will help
identify key technologies forming within organizations and work with
standards organizations such as the IETF as well as W3C. The
collaborative partnership and networking work is kind of like a
dating service, getting companies introduced to the right potential
partners and investors. As for marketing strategy and tactics
consulting, Khudairi says she has people coming to her saying "do
for us what you did for XML." It also involves convincing Fortune
500 clients that traditional marketing isn't all that effective in
the online world.
Zot Group has seven consultants on staff and Khudairi says she's
trying to grow the team. There are already eight clients lined up,
some Fortune 500, some start-ups. One is office.com, who wants to
relaunch as an XML-generated site. When she announced the company at
the end of April, Khudairi received 11 calls from potential clients
and a several from would-be investors. She says she was happy to be
hearing from both.
