APPLE "THINKS DIFFERENT" IN ASIA
In Hong Kong there will be one rebel missing -- the Dalai Lama -- from
billboards featuring the "Think Different" advertising campaign in which
Apple honors such revolutionary figures as Gandhi, Einstein, Picasso,
and (except in Hong Kong) the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader who
symbolizes resistance to oppression by the Chinese government. An Apple
spokesperson has defended dropping the Dalai Lama from the Asian
campaign by saying: "The Dalai Lama really stands for our message in
the United States.
But in China, he may not get across the message that Apple is trying to
send." (New York Times 17 Apr 98)
