So it's enlightening to hear that per our brainstorm last fall, there *is* a
System Security Engineering CMM. I'm looking forward to hearing about it in
this talk.

The meta-CMM, the maturity model maturity model, also seems worth a look-see.

A Capability Maturity Model (CMM) is a reference model of best practices
for an engineering discipline. A project or organization can compare their
practices against a CMM to measure how mature their processes are, to
benchmark against competitors, and to identify improvement opportunities.
The Software CMM (SW-CMM), and its five level scale, has become a de facto
standard for assessing and improving software processes throughout the world.

The success of the SW-CMM was soon copied by other disciplines, and has led
to a world of CMMs. There are currently over 30 different CMMs in use
throughout industry, covering a variety of disciplines, and reflecting an
assortment of structures and formats. This diversification is causing
increasing difficulty for developers and customers in selecting and applying
the right model(s).

To address this problem, the Department of Defense recently initiated a
joint SEI/industry/government effort to design, implement, transition, and
sustain a framework for integrating the existing CMMs. The goal is to
simplify the understanding and use of CMMs, and to improve the efficiency
and return-on-investment for those who use CMMs for process improvement
and process assessment. The release of SW-CMM version 2.0 has been delayed,
awaiting the completion of this framework.

This talk presents an overview of the major CMMs in use today, and the
status of the DoD CMM integration effort. It will include comparisons of the:

* Capability Maturity Model for Software (SW-CMM)
* Systems Engineering Capability Maturity Model (SE-CMM)
* Integrated Product Development Capability Maturity Model (IPD-CMM)
* System Security Engineering Capability Maturity Model (SSE-CMM)
* Software Acquisition Capability Maturity Model (SA-CMM)
* People Capability Maturity Model (P-CMM)

Relationships to non-CMM standards, such as ISO 9000/9001, DoD-STD-2167A,
MIL-STD-498, ISO 12207, and IEEE P1220, will also be highlighted.

Biography: Dr. Rick Hefner is an SEI-authorized CBA-IPI Lead Assessor,
with over 20 years of experience in software development and process
improvement. He is a member of the DoD joint CMM Integration team and
Co-Chair of the Assessment Team, and he teaches locally on the SW-CMM
and related subjects. Dr. Hefner serves as the Manager of Process
Technology for TRW, where his focus is on practical, low-cost methods
for process assessment, process improvement, and training.

Take 405 North to the University/Jeffrey exit. Left onto
University (it's Jeffrey if you go right). Left onto Culver. Right onto
Campus. Left onto East Peltason Drive which takes you into UCI.

Parking: You must have a permit to park at UCI.
~~~~~~~~
If your company is a sponsor of IRUS, you may obtain a special IRUS
parking permit from your company representative (see below).
If your company is not a sponsor of IRUS, you will need to purchase a
parking permit. Pull over on East Peltason Drive as soon as you enter UCI. You
can purchase a permit at the automated machine ($4 - quarters or $1 bills).
Proceed forward through the lighted intersection at Pereira Rd.
If you purchased your permit, then at the first stop sign (at Gabrielino),
make a right and park in lot 18C. Use the portion of the lot on
the left. When you turn into that part of the lot, you will be facing
the Engineering Gateway building.
If you have an IRUS parking permit, then proceed to the next stop sign
(at Los Trancos) and go right into lot 18/18A. You can park
anywhere there is a red AR sign, or in an unmarked space (but not in
the space with the white VIP sign, metered spaces, or service spaces).
Note: You can also use this permit to park in lot 18C.
