Linux equivalent to Age of Empires? (a request)

I don't know the first thing about computer games,
except for ancient things like adventure and rogue and nethack.

But... my son likes playing age of empires... on windows...
and I'm trying to figure out what would be a good replacement
for him now that he's running linux. Right now he's using his
sister's machine which is still running windows.

So... what's out there for linux?
With maps, constructing stuff, strategies, history...
