As I forgot to mention in the original posting, the McDonald story not
only relies upon several sorts of "snow crashes" (dubbed "fracters" by
the protagonist and his co-creator), but indicates how they were
created.
It would be fascinating to attempt the process, and I can think of a
number of ways a la SETI@home that it would be do-able.

I was disappointed when I checked the date of "Scissors Cut Paper Wrap Stone" by Ian McDonald-- 1994, 2 years after "Snow Crash". But I read the latter once or twice, and don't own a copy, whereas SCPWS is one of my "every couple of years" books.
Very short, very sharp, very good.
