Nice headline, and Gizmag kicks it up a notch by invoking the Nuclear option.
You have to go to the original Grauniad article, and look at the figures at
the very end to get useful facts, though.

* The impressive "cars vs. ships" ratio comes from comparing SOx emissions
  only, which is a nice bit of cherry-picking.  Hey, it's journalism.

* The ships' NOx emissions are far more significant both in volume and in
  health effect, but don't make for such an impressive headline.
 
* SOx, NOx and particulates can be reduced quite significantly by using
  basic pollution-control measures.  Add some efficency and you're golden.
