[FoRK] Annual book poll: What are you reading this holidays?

Jeff Bone <jbone at place.org> on Wed Dec 5 17:32:46 PST 2007

Not sure this is "holiday" reading per se, but a few recent titles:
Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters... by Miller and Kanazawa

Making Things Talk... by Tom Igoe

Physical Computing by Igoe and O'Sullivan

God's Demon by Wayne Barlowe (unf. not recommended; he's a more
interesting illustrator than writer)

Uglies / Pretties / Specials / Extras by Scott Westerfield
(children's books, but pretty good...)

   Grey by Jon Armstrong

The Electric Church by Jeff Summers

A War of Gifts by Orson Scott Card (ugh)

This Alien Shore by C. S. Friedman (on a recommendation; a bit
genre hacky)

Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War by
Joe Bageant

...a bit of a dry patch, truth be told; anybody have anything
interesting to recommend?

Silky, re: your question, this isn't precisely what you're looking
for but HIGHLY recommended anyway:

How to Solve It by G. Polya

I'd have to give a thumbs-down on the Knuth books (I know,
blasphemy!) If you're looking for a practical overview, that's a bit
dense to start with. OTOH, I don't really have a recommended title
off the top of my head. Will give it some thought though...
