Some people seem to have a plan and manage to make it work. I'm not
convinced; lots of people's plans are actually after the fact
rationalisations of key events in their lives. Know your strengths,
know your weaknesses (and be brutally frank with yourself about /
both/). Work with the best people you can find. Money's necessary but
not actually that exciting. Doing something you enjoy allows you to
cut out the middle (wo)man in the whole work -> cash -> fun thing. Oh
and by all means specialise but don't become blinkered - if the only
tool you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.

Having specialised there's a great temptation to protect your
investment by persevering with a technology well beyond its best
before date. Funnily enough when you do eventually jump ship you may
find that your specialised knowledge is more generally applicable
than you thought it'd be.
