MMRPGS: Economies Happen

Perhaps when technology makes real-world goods trivial to 
produce, we'll just trade arbitrary game-world goods to keep
busy.

Two recent articles address the emergence of economic trade
between game-worlds and the real-world.

CNET reports on a professor's study which pegs the EverQuest
economy at $5 million in net exports and a per-capita GNP 
of $2,266 -- about that of Russia:

CNN also reports on the phenomenon of in-game items selling
for real money, and notes a new game, Project Entropia, 
which intends to make its money not from monthly playing
fees, but by selling fresh artifacts to players:
