LCS, simply by virtue (misdeed?) of its size has extreme dependency on
DARPA. A little known fact is that DARPA provided the seed funding for W3C,
a very large amount indeed. Furthermore, MIT is self-centered enough it
doesn't participate in any of the NSF metacenters like graphics, Center for
Research on Parallel Computing, geometry center, etc. Heck, it won't even
cooperate with the MIT Media Lab :-)

LCS makes a big show of 'doing its duty' by sending a 'ritual sacrifice' to
DARPA every few years -- they pretty much always have someone in residence
there.

It's definitely a mutually profitable relationship...

Yep, that's how it usually works. Which is why we shun stability around
these parts. Objectively, though, this is an incredible amount of traffic
for FoRK.
