So I've been combing the Altavista site using the Virage Image Engine.
I don't know how they do it, but it kicks ass. The company was founded in
1994 by Dr. Ramesh Jain from UCSD and looks like it was funded by Adobe
Ventures, Compaq Computer, Sutter Hill Ventures Trinity Ventures, Media
Technology Ventures, TTC Ventures, and Hambrecht & Quist.

Also, Brad Horowitz is their CTO who came from the MIT Media lab. The also have
two Apple guys, one from Cinebase and one from Worldwide marketing. Pretty cool
stuff. I started out trying to look up good clip art for my slides and ended up
completely getting lost doing searches for surfing pictures.

Each picture not only is categorized, but they have information about the
picture and also a 'Visually Similar' button that works fairly well. Right
now they are well funded and privately owned, but I wish I had some of their stock.
