We're living in a world where time is literally raining down on us:
GPS, comsats, etc. It's coming through our pipes, too, on channel 2 on
cable. So why does my VCR still blink 12:00?

NTP does very nice Internet time. I think xntpd is a bit overkill for
user workstations, but it's good to run it everywhere because it helps
make the timebase more stable. Ntpdate is a great client if you just
want to set the clock once a day.
