Feds Help Put Faster Chips on Faster Track

by Gene Koprowski=20
9:05am 12.Sep.97.PDT Is Moore's Law about to be
broken? Perhaps. A new computer chipmaking
consortium says that an experimental
semiconductor manufacturing process may more
than double processing power for chips every two
years, if a US$250 million investment announced
on Thursday pans out as planned.=20

The consortium, an alliance of Intel, Motorola,
AMD and the US Department of Energy, seeks to
develop "extreme ultraviolet" light technology, or
EUV, to etch the submicron patterns on computer
chips that contain the brains of the PC.=20
