VALENTI/LESSIG DEBATE ON THE FUTURE OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

On Sunday, October 1, at 7:00pm, Jack Valenti will take on Lawrence Lessig
to debate the role of copyright protection in the digital age. Valenti,
President and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America <
http://www.mpaa.org <http://www.mpaa.org> > will explain the MPAA's pursuit
of stronger intellectual property rights in the face of the challenges posed
by the Internet. The so-called "Cyberspace Prosectuor" (see

<http://www.thestandard.com/article/display/0,1151,10885,00.html> >) will
argue that the rampant piracy on the Internet undermines the creative
process itself by vitiating the incentive structure on which artists depend.
Lessig, in turn, will argue that intellectual property protection has
already gone too far, and that the current trend in IP protection
jeopardizes the vibrancy of the public domain and the principle of an
intellecutal commons. The debate will take place in the Ames Courtroom at
Harvard Law School.

This event will be webcast live! If you'd like to watch the webcast, please

ELDRED V. RENO MOOT COURT

The Berkman Center and Copyright's Commons invite you to join us as we

before the D.C. Circuit is scheduled for October 5). At 12:00pm on October 2
in the Ames Courtroom, Lawrence Lessig will face New York civil rights
attorney Richard Emery for a moot court preparation of the appeal. Three
members of the Harvard Law faculty - Richard H. Fallon, William Fisher III,
and Charles Fried - will serve as judges for the event.

This event will not be webcast, but it will be videotaped and a copy of that
tape will be archived later on the Berkman Center web site. We will let you
know as soon as the video is available. For more information about the moot
