Making Friends Will Get Easier

Microsoft and more than 40 vendors said last week they are joining to
create a standard protocol for creating "buddy lists" on the Internet.
The lists are a popular feature on America Online for tracking who is
online and sending quick messages. Microsoft has submitted a
proposed specification called Rendezvous Protocol (RVP) to the
Internet Engineering Task Force. Last month, Netscape
Communications partnered with AOL to offer a buddy list service
through Communicator and Navigator, but the technology is
proprietary. RVP uses an open, distributed model for a variety of
online communications, including sending instant text messages, files
and pictures, conducting audio- and videoconferences,
and issuing invitations to chat rooms.
