NEW YORK (Reuters) - Online giant America Online Inc. will buy
Internet software pioneer Netscape Communications Corp. for $4.2
billion in a deal involving Sun Microsystems Inc., the companies
announced Tuesday, bringing together three of Microsoft Corp.'s
fiercest competitors. The all-stock deal rearranging the Internet
business landscape came just a day after AOL, the world's No. 1
online service, and Netscape, whose browser software made the
Internet accessible to a mass audience, confirmed they were in talks.
Under a related three-year deal with Sun, the Palo Alto, Calif.,
company - whose Java Internet programming language is now seen as the
greatest threat to Microsoft's software dominance - will develop and
market electronic commerce software that makes it easy to set up shop
in cyberspace.
