Internet World: Sun-Netscape Alliance Readies Wireless Server

By David F. Carr

The Sun-Netscape Alliance ( http://www.iplanet.com ) is
preparing to enter the emerging market for serving Internet
content to wireless devices.

The alliance, which does business under the iPlanet brand,
is beta testing an iPlanet Wireless Server for release later
this quarter. It supports Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
devices, as well as all standards-based Web browsers.
Designed for use with the iPlanet Messaging, Calendar, and
Directory Servers, it emphasizes quick access to mail,
calendar-driven event notification, and a common address
book.

The Alliance says its server sends Short Message Service
(SMS) notes to pagers and cell phones, prioritizes messages
and auto-responds to them based on subject lines and
keywords, and lets users skim message topics before
downloading the messages.
