I think the author is actually John Varley, who got the Hugo for
novella for this piece in 1985. Varley doesn't use computers in his
writing, BTW, which is odd for the genre; in recent interviews, he
says it's just personal preference, but I seem to recall some earlier,
more polemical statements on the matter.
