If you're carrying a power cord, then there shouldn't be a problem, since
there's undoubtedly an outlet nearby. I vaguely remember having to plug an
external SCSI disk in just to let security hear it spin up... no big deal...

As for checked luggage, I *never* check anything when I travel by myself. A
carry-on for clothes and a carry-on for books & laptop is my MO.
